US auctions are huge trading floors that are closed to unauthorized persons (special registration is required to participate in the bidding). Virtually all car auctions in the US serve dealerships, that is, focused on professionals in the automotive business.
Only professional brokers are allowed to participate in auctions such as Manheim, IAAI. An unlicensed person can not be admitted to the trading platforms of such auctions. Cars at these auctions are usually sold by manufacturers' partners (having accepted them from former owners as trade-ins) or various intermediaries, insurance companies and leasing companies that sell cars after the expiration date.
US auctions are part of a single National Association of Auto Auctions, which strictly monitors the implementation of a number of formal requirements for car sales. Many cars undergo pre-sales training and are put up for auction with some warranty, which for one reason or another, manufacturers did not sell through their distributors' showrooms. Cars for auction are sold by the same rules as in a regular auction. The price is formed in the process of bargaining and depends on the demand, make, model, mileage and condition of the car.
Potential buyers can familiarize themselves in advance with the lots (either live at the auction site, or remotely by computer), view photographs and descriptions to select any vehicle submitted for bidding. An example of this is the Simulcast system, which allows dealers to participate in auctions of the Manheim system remotely, via their computer. After a purchase you can pay for a more detailed Post-Sale Inspection (PSI), which ensures that the preliminary report matches the actual state of the car.
The price of used cars can be determined before the auction. Using online access from our website, you can first navigate the average auction prices for the desired car by looking at auction sales statistics with mileage and condition similar to the one you need. Sellers, in turn, are well aware of market prices before selling a car, so they won’t sell a car much cheaper than the average price of such a car.
There are several auction networks in the US, the most famous ones are MANHEIM, COPART, IAA and NPA. Of course, this list is not exhaustive - in the USA there are other auctions that sell both new and used cars. When buying a car at such an auction, the buyer is guaranteed the "purity" of the biography of the car being purchased, the absence of skillfully disguised defects and the accuracy of the odometer reading (after all, it is the mileage that is the initial parameter in determining the order of car maintenance and the list of maintenance work).
A car may contain some hidden and obvious defects, but any accident, theft, or other type of significant damage must be strictly recorded in the documents. All cars that our customers buy can be checked for free through an AutoCheck report. By entering the vehicle identification number (VIN) in the AutoCheck tool on our website, you can find the full history of the car (car was a rental, in an accident, etc.).
